If Tombstones Could Talk

The Oconto County Historical Society is sponsoring its annual cemetery walk, “If Tombstones Could Talk”, on the evenings of September 17, 18 and 19. 

This is a special year for the cemetery walk, as it is the 10th anniversary of making local history come alive.

On the evenings of September 17 and 18 the walk will be presented indoors in the John B. LeMay Auditorium, at Oconto Senior High School, on Superior Avenue. These two indoor performances will begin at 6:00 pm.

The evening of September 19, will find the walk being staged outdoors at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, located at 3024 N. River Road, in Oconto. The walk will begin at 6:00 pm.

The individuals who will be portrayed this year and have their family stories told include: ROSE MARY “BELLE” VAN GAAL, a long-time local cook and caterer, JIM LANE, local businessman and golfer, ROSALIE NOEL COTE, one of the first students at St. Peter’s Catholic School, TOM DUSCHENE, a cook on the boats that sailed the Great Lakes, and a “soup maker” for a local restaurant, LENORE WIEBUSCH, a nurse for two Oconto doctors, and HOWARD MERLINE, a local businessman and active in military organizations in Oconto. 

Tickets are available at the Carriage Museum, 917 Park Avenue, Oconto, from now through September 1. Museum hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 4:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 4:00 pm. The museum is closed on Tuesday. If any tickets remain unsold, they will be available at Robert’s Hometown Hardware, 919 Main Street, Oconto, from September 3 through 14. Cost of a ticket is $8.00.

There are a limited number of tickets for the performances and tickets sell out quickly. No tickets will be sold on the evenings of the walk.
Complimentary refreshments will be served to tour-goers in the meeting room of the Carriage Museum each evening.
