Oconto County Map Welcome to Oconto County, Wisconsin...a place for you. Since the County is over 100 miles long, we've made it easy for you to navigate the array of tourism resources available in the County, or to help you locate available sites and buildings and obtain business assistance. The adjacent map divides the County into three distinct sections. All resources and attractions are categorized by region within the County. So come to Oconto County to play, live or work, because after all, we are a place for you!

We've got trails...and lots of 'em. With over 450 miles of ATV trails and routes, 475 miles of snowmobile trails, 210 miles of mountain bike trails, 75 miles of equestrian trails, 45 miles of cross-country ski trails, and miles and miles of hiking and biking venues. That amounts to well over 1,000 miles of designated trails...or...the distance from Green Bay to New Orleans. That's quite a ride!

When you come to Oconto County to fish, ride our trails, or just see the sights, be sure to throw your clubs in the car. No matter where you are in the county, you won't be far from one of our eight courses.

Breakwater Park is a one-acre park located at the mouth of the Oconto River. Offering a pavilion, great fishing areas, boat-launching and boat slip rentals, this is a park you don’t want to miss! Take a drive out to the end of the jetty and take in the view of the beautiful bay you’ll be sure to come back.

Copper Culture State Park is a 45-acre park located on the north bank of the Oconto River filled with a great amount of history. A monument erected by the State Historical Society and the Oconto County Historical Society in 1952, this park contains a 7,500-year-old burial site. At one time this was considered to be the earliest evidence of human settlement in North America east of the Mississippi River. You’ll also find a pavilion, picnic areas, fishing areas and walking/hiking trails. Enjoy the day hiking followed by a rest along the banks of the Oconto River..There is no cost of admission to the Park. Attractions include the Copper Culture Museum and a walking trail with historical and nature signs. The City sponsors a candlelight walk through the trails annually that is fun for the whole family. In addition, there are bike racks, restrooms and charcoal grills available for use.

Grange Park is located in the Town of Little River, adjacent to County Highway A, along the Little River. Grange Park provides water access to the Little River, pavilion, grills and vaulted bathrooms.

Holtwood Park has 68 acres along 4,000 feet of frontage on the Oconto River. A sports haven, this park contains two pavilions, a fishing area, a boat launch, six ball diamonds, playground equipment, two sand volleyball courts, wide-open space, picnic areas and a football/rugby/soccer field. Try something new on any given day of the week at this grand sporting complex. You can always catch something going on.

Located midway between the mouth of the Oconto River and Oconto's central business district, this six-acre park offers a pavilion, fine fishing areas, plenty of open space and a boat-launching ramp. Stop by during Copperfest for exciting activities and catch the truck & tractor pulls on its constructed dirt track.

Oconto City Park is located 2.5 miles south of Oconto on County Road N. The park includes a playground, beach and swimming, basketball hoop and sand volleyball courts, picnic areas, restrooms and changing areas.

Situated on 80 acres of majestic pines, this park offers a fishing pond primarily for day use. From Oconto Falls, take Hwy. 22 east to Hwy. 141. Travel south about about 1 1/2 miles to Cty. I, just north of the Oconto River. Turn west and go 1/8 mile to Pioneer park Road. Turn north and travel 1/2 mile to the park

Located at corner of Collins Avenue and 7th St. There is a substantial amount of wooded acreage with walking and biking trails in the summer and cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails in the winter. The cleared area has a picnic area, restrooms, playground equipment and lots of open space, great for a game of frisbee. It also hosts Oconto’s ice rink in the winter and roller rink in the summer. Take in the beauty of nature year round.

The Machickanee Cross Country Ski Trails were originally planned and developed by local skiers in the Oconto County Forest with the cooperation of the Oconto County Land , Forest , and Parks Committee. The current trail system has resulted from the efforts of many volunteers who have donated their time, money, and energy since 1978. In 1982, the Machickanee Cross Country Ski Club was formed to organize those efforts. The trails lead through a series of forest types, including red pine plantations, coniferous swamps, oak ridges, and birch and aspen stands. They undulate through topography ranging from creek bottoms to ridge tops. Numerous hills and curves of various slopes and lengths make this course a challenge for the intermediate to advanced skiers.
The Machickanee Cross Country Ski Trails also include a beginner loop that can be enjoyed by skiers of all ability levels.

The city of Oconto has a large marsh area also known as the Oconto Marsh and is part of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail, Lake Michigan Region. The Oconto Marsh & Rush Point Refuge is located just north of the City of Oconto on the west shore of Green Bay. Covering more than 800 acres, the marsh is an area rich in birdlife, which includes: Wood Ducks, Ring-neck Ducks, Snowy Owl, Scoters and many, many more. It also encompasses a state waterfowl sanctuary and a breeding ground for the "yellow-headed blackbird. Uncommon birds such as Acadian Flycatchers and Cerulean Warblers can also be found here.

This 8-mile trail passes through the forests and farms of Oconto County between the communities of Oconto and Stiles Junction. Outside of Oconto, the trail parallels the Oconto River. The river has a long history of human activity, dating back 6000 years to the early Native Americans who lived along the river, to the fur trading and logging operations of the last few centuries, to present-day recreation activities such as canoeing and kayaking.Copper Culture State Park, which is near the trail, sits on the banks of the river and features a Native American burial ground and museum. The Copper Culture burial ground is the oldest cemetery site in Wisconsin and possibly the oldest site in eastern North America.

The course is West of Abrams, about 19 miles North of Green Bay off Highway 41, is really only one layout, but the nines are completely different

If you enjoy listening to the soothing sound of flowing water, you will appreciate this campground. About one-third of the 30 campsites are located adjacent to the Oconto River. Trout fishing, berry picking, rafting, canoeing, swimming, and sightseeing can all be done in or near this campground. Weekends bring the most campers, with only moderate use occurring during the week. So come and relax among the pines and enjoy the sound and beauty of Bagley Rapids.

This campground overlooks a scenic 263-acre lake. Bask in the sun on the beautiful beach and then take a relaxing dip in the lake, or enjoy the fishing. Boot Lake contains walleye, northern pike, bass, musky, and panfish. In addition, several nearby streams offer excellent trout fishing, and the Wolf River provides fishing, rafting, and first-class canoeing opportunities. The Jones Spring non-motorized area is nearby, and offers hiking, hunting, and cross-country skiing. Generally, use at this popular campground is heavy throughout the summer.

For groups of friends and relatives who wish to escape to a nicely wooded setting, Boulder Lake may be the best bet. All groups sites are reservable. Boulder Lake Campground also offers 89 single-site campsites. Recent improvements have been made to this campground, which includes electricity at some sites, an RV dump station, 3 shower and flush toilet facilities, an expanded beach, and an ampitheatre. Go fishing on the 362-acre Boulder Lake, and you may catch walleye, northern pike, bass, or panfish. Ice fishing is also popular here, and the boat landing and parking area are plowed in winter for your convenience. Nearby streams are good for trout fishing, and the Wolf River offers additional fishing, rafting and canoeing opportunities. If you plan to come on a summer weekend, get an early start! Even though this is the Chequamegon-Nicolet's largest campground, campsites fill up fast.

Heaven's Up North Campground is a uniquely designed family campground with 116 large sites suited for any type of camping unit and nestled in the middle of Nicolet National Forest. It is located near Lakewood, Wisconsin, a very scenic and secluded recreational area in Northern Wisconsin. Located nearby are many lakes, rivers and streams for the fishing and boating enthusiast. The modern, clean and up to date facilities are a real plus to campers. It gathers all the rustic atmosphere of national and state parks but includes lots of amenities.

You are bound to see wildlife on this trail. Jones Spring is a 2,000 acre area managed for non-motorized use and offers several loops of hiking and groomed cross-country ski trails (for traditional style skiing). The area features three lakes. Fanny Lake has five walk-in campsites on the shore. On an overlook between Upper and Lower Jones Lakes, you'll find an Adirondack-style shelter for a quick rest while skiing or a place to picnic when hiking. The trail traverses a variety of landscapes and forest types which also means a variety of wildlife. Look for the wood duck boxes which have been placed here to increase the wood duck population. Jones Spring Area is also managed as a wildlife area for hunting.

Whitewater Rafting is not the only thing we have to offer. Kosir's also offers camping. Located only steps away from our Peshtigo take-out and less than an hour from the Michigan border (which is the Menominee River) we have a large, wooded campground, complete with a clean, ultra-modern shower house.

A wooden boardwalk begins your journey into another world of primitive bog vegetation, deer trails, squirrels' nests, and the workings of woodpeckers. Hike up and down the ridges around a large open bog area. The huge boulders you'll see are the calling cards left behind when the last glacier receded and formed the rugged terrain over 10,000 years ago. Campers can access the trail from several points in the campground.

Follow this 1/4 mile trail into a unique "cathedral" of towering pines and hemlock trees. This area survived Wisconsin's logging era and has been preserved in its natural state. During early summer you may observe great blue herons nesting high in the tallest pines. This is one of Wisconsin's largest active heron colonies. The site may be visited May through October.
Directions: From Lakewood, take State Hwy 32 North 1 mile to Archibald Road (FR 2121). Turn left (west) for 1-1/2 miles. Watch for signs on the left side of the road. Turn right to parking area. There is parking for 5 vehicles, hiking trails and benches. The site is accessible for persons with disabilities.

This short, moderately steep trail (2/3 miles) leads to the top of a rock outcrop that features five vistas. Three of the vistas overlook Chute Pond, one looks over a Forest Service tree plantation, and one looks north along State Highway 32 with Bagley Rapids on the west and Green Lake on the east. At the northernmost vista, look north to see the last remaining Forest Service fire lookout tower almost six miles away at Mountain. Looking south from the southernmost vista you can see the radio tower on Suring Hill, about eight miles away. Be sure to bring your binoculars on this hike!
Directions: From Mountain, take State Hwy 32 south for 3 1/2 miles to Parkway Drive and turn right (west). Follow the signs to the scenic overlook. Parking lot for 4 vehicles. The site is 2/3 mile from the parking lot and is not accessible to persons with disabilities.

You are bound to see wildlife on this trail. The Lakewood Ski Trail winds through beautiful, wooded setting with rolling hills. The 22 kilometer main trail, known as the blue trail is continuous between McCaslin Brook Country Club and County F. Several secondary loops connect to the blue trail. The blue trail is maintained for both traditional cross-country skiing and ski skating. Trails are groomed in accordance with snow conditions. In the summer season, mountain bikes are welcome, but are not allowed on the golf course part of the trail.

This trail is maintained by the privately-run Silver Birch Ranch and is a system of interconnected loops. One of these loops crosses Rose Lake. Before skiing this loop, check ice conditions on the lake. This trail is groomed for traditional skiing and is marked for beginning, intermediate and advanced skiers. A map is available at Silver Birch Ranch.

The Nicolet Nordic Ski Trails are cross-country trails groomed by volunteer efforts of local ski club members and friends in cooperation with the Forest Service. Most of the trails are double tracked. A trail map is located at the trailhead.
Directions: From the town of Mountain, follow County Highway W west for 1 mile to McComb Lake Road (FR 2311). Turn left and go south 2 miles to parking area on the left (east) side of the road. Space is available for approximately 30 vehicles.

The Nicolet State Trail in Oconto County begins in the town of Gillett near the Oconto/Shawano county line. Gillett is located on State Highway 22, about 18 miles northeast of the city of Shawano. The trail runs for about 30 miles north from Gillett in Oconto County and passes through the communities of Suring, Mountain, Lakewood and Townsend. In Suring, a parking area with access to the trail is available next to the Village Hall near State Highway 32. Beginning around Mountain, the trail parallels Highway 32 the rest of the way north into Forest County.

This popular 15-mile trail is located north of Highway 64 and just to the east of Highway 55. All trails are marked with equestrian trail signs. The Popple Ridge Horse Trail Camping Area is located on the south end of Setting Lake Road.

This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign which describes how early Indians came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. The west portion of this trail leads to the site of the Carter Fire Lookout Tower. Once used to spot forest fires, all that now remains are the tower footings and roadway. Most fire towers on the Nicolet were erected in the 1930's and have since been discontinued as aerial surveillance took over.

Zippel Park was donated by the Zippel Family to the City of Gillett. The park includes approximately 17 acres of property in the center of the City. The park is used not only for the Oconto County Fair but also for the local 4th of July celebration, an annual corn roast, Cancer Society functions, and many family reunions and other group functions. The park boasts a nice playground area with new equipment, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, band shell, one large picnic shelter and three smaller shelters with tables and grills. There is a recreational diamond in the park. Zippel Park is open to the public.

Location: Turn on to Mead Avenue off of South Main Street. As you drive on Mead Ave, you will come to a stop sign. Continue straight on to an unpaved gravel road for a short distance and you will come to the Tubing Hill.

The Oconto Falls Sno-Jokers maintain 37.3 miles of snowmobile trails in Oconto County. The Sno-Jokers trail system connects with neighboring trail systems of Chase, Gillett, Krakow, and Lena. Communities located along our trail system include Oconto Falls, Morgan, Sampson, and Stiles. Our trail system passes through the Machickanee Forest as well as other wooded and farmland countryside. The trail system also allows easy access to the city of Oconto Falls via designated city trails and the Oconto River. Just a reminder to please stay on the trail system. Every one has to remember to respect the private land the trail system passes through. It isn't our right to snowmobile, it is a privilege, a privilege we could lose someday.

The Chase Sno-Chasers Snowmobile Club has been in existence since the mid-1960's. The club currently has 12.3 miles of funded trail. The Sno-Chasers have built their own drag and lease a four-wheel drive tractor to pull it with during the winter months. When weather permits, the trails are groomed 2-3 times per week by volunteers from the club. Sno-Chasers gather at local supporting businesses every second Tuesday of the month from October-April to organize events and discuss various topics.

The Paul Bunyan Riders was created as an effort by the local businesses in the early years to support Snowmobiling in the area. Incorporated in November 1970, and now with approximately 150 members, Paul Buyon Riders are 100% A.W.S.C. (Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs) member club. They groom approximately 77.6 miles of funded trails and approximately 25 miles of unfunded trails. They welcome all riders to consider joining their club.
