Mary Harteau was the first teacher in the Morgan school (southwest of Oconto Falls) organized in 1878. The story is told that in those days, teachers sometimes removed their shoes and walked barefoot to and from school over the rough and muddy roads to preserve all-too precious shoe leather.

To an Oconto girl, Lena McCartney, went the distinction of having a village, Lena, named after her. It happened when her financee, George Hall, the postmaster of Oconto was asked to suggest a name for a hamlet within his jurisdiction.
