The transport ship USS Oconto was built in 1944 and named after our county. It carried troops, freed POW's, cargo, and mail in the Pacific. The "Mytee O" was removed from service in 1946 after sailing over 100,000 miles. To Wal Phillips of Oconto goes the distinction of having a funeral for his horse in 1875. The casket was twelve feet long and four feet deep; the chief mourner was old Rob's mate, another horse. |
